In 1978 an unbalanced homosexual called Dennis Nilsen began a series of killings which ended with his capture in 1983. Dennis had become a necrophiliac.
Dennis’ early life was not particularly traumatic. Born in Scotland to Scottish mother and His Norwegian military father. His father was away most of the time and after the birth of their third child his parents divorced. He discovered his sexual orientation at an early age and that brought him great shame.
He served in the army and followed that with a job in the Metropolitan Police in London. That job didn’t last long and eventually he worked in Jobcentres helping others find work.
During his stint with the Police he started to frequent gay bars and having casual liaisons with men.
In December 1978 Nilsen picked up a 14 year old boy who had been trying to buy alcohol. They went to Nilsen’s apartment and drank heavily until they passed out on Nilsen’s bed. The next morning Nilsen woke and decided he didn’t want the boy to leave. He tried to strangle him with a necktie, but eventually drowned him in a bucket of water. He kept the body for 8 months.
This was the start of what would become one of Britain’s most grizzly series of murders. Neilsen murdered at least 12 young men and boys, although the number is suspected to be higher. He kept many of the body for a long time before dissecting and burning them.
He was arrested in 1983 after police investigated reports of a foul smell coming from drains in the building his apartment was situated in. The smell turned out to be rotting human flesh clogging up the drains.
Nilsen almost immediately confessed, claiming he wanted to get everything off his chest. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on November 3 1983.
He is currently being fed, housed and watered in Yorkshire’s Full Sutton maximum security prison at a cost of 80,000 British Pounds a year. So for, in today’s money, his accommodation has cost around 3,000,000 Pounds (Approx $4m USD).
Apparently he spends a lot of his time getting drunk and high.
